Glutathione

Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in nearly every cell of the body. It is commonly used to support antioxidant defenses, reduce oxidative stress, support liver function, aid recovery from illness or intense exercise, and promote overall wellness. It is also used in some aesthetic and wellness settings for skin brightening and reducing hyperpigmentation, although these uses are considered off-label. Not FDA approved for the listed indications.

How Is Glutathione Administered?

Most commonly administered as:
• Intravenous push (IVP)
• Intramuscular injection (IM)
• Oral supplements (lower bioavailability) – not offered by Aureum

Why is Glutathione given IVP or IM instead of IV bag?

Glutathione should not automatically be mixed with every IV additive. One of the challenges with glutathione is that it is a reducing agent (antioxidant), meaning it can chemically react with certain vitamins, minerals, and medications in the same bag, potentially decreasing stability or effectiveness.

Because of this, the safest and simplest approach is to:

  1. Give glutathione as a separate IV push over 5–10 minutes afterward

  2. Give IM separately
     

Common schedule:

General Wellness / Antioxidant Support

  • 600–1,200 mg 1x weekly

Recovery / High Oxidative Stress

(illness recovery, intense training, frequent travel, etc.)

  • 600–2,000 mg 1–2x per week

Skin Brightening Protocols

  • Often 600–2,000 mg 1–3 times weekly

  • Usually continued for several months before evaluating results

  • Results vary significantly between individuals

Maintenance (after achieving desired results)

  • 600–1,200 mg every 2–4 weeks

  • Or discontinue


When to Stop:
Glutathione is not typically associated with dependence or withdrawal. Treatment is generally discontinued if:
• Side effects occur
• The desired treatment goal is reached
• A provider recommends discontinuation
• The patient develops an allergy or intolerance

 

Common Effects:
Most patients tolerate glutathione well.

Possible side effects include:
• Nausea
• Abdominal discomfort
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Flushing
• Temporary lightheadedness
• Injection site irritation
 

Rare adverse effects:
• Allergic reactions
• Bronchospasm (primarily reported with inhaled glutathione in patients with asthma)

How Does Glutathione Work In The Body?

1. Glutathione as the Body's Master Antioxidant

Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids:

• Glutamate
• Cysteine
• Glycine

It is produced naturally by the body and is present in nearly every cell. Every day, normal metabolism, exercise, environmental toxins, infections, inflammation, UV exposure, and stress generate unstable molecules known as reactive oxygen species (ROS), commonly referred to as free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive because they contain unpaired electrons. To stabilize themselves, they steal electrons from nearby proteins, fats, cell membranes, DNA, and other cellular structures. This process is known as oxidative stress.

 

Oxidative stress contributes to:
• Cellular aging
• Inflammation
• Tissue damage
• Neurodegenerative disease
• Cardiovascular disease
• Liver injury

Glutathione helps prevent this damage by donating electrons to free radicals, neutralizing them before they can damage cells. Unlike many antioxidants, glutathione is present inside cells, allowing it to protect structures directly at the site where oxidative damage occurs.

 

2. The Glutathione Redox Cycle

When glutathione neutralizes a free radical, it becomes oxidized itself.

The body then uses the enzyme glutathione reductase along with NADPH to convert oxidized glutathione back into its active reduced form. This recycling system allows glutathione to continuously function as an antioxidant rather than being used up after a single reaction. This is one reason glutathione is considered one of the most important antioxidant systems in human physiology.

 

3. Liver Detoxification Support

One of glutathione's most important functions occurs in the liver.

 

The liver constantly processes:
• Medications
• Alcohol
• Environmental toxins
• Metabolic waste products

Many substances become more reactive after Phase I liver metabolism. Glutathione participates in Phase II detoxification by attaching to these compounds through a process called conjugation.

Once attached, these compounds become:
• More water-soluble
• Easier for the body to eliminate through urine or bile
• Less likely to damage tissues

This is why glutathione is often discussed in relation to liver health and detoxification. Importantly, glutathione does not "flush toxins out" directly. Rather, it assists the body's existing detoxification pathways in processing and eliminating potentially harmful compounds.

4. Regeneration of Other Antioxidants

Glutathione works closely with other antioxidant systems. After vitamin C or vitamin E neutralize free radicals, they become oxidized and less active. Glutathione helps recycle these antioxidants back into their active forms, allowing them to continue protecting tissues from oxidative damage. This creates a network of antioxidant defenses rather than a single isolated system.

5. Mitochondrial Protection

Mitochondria are the energy-producing structures inside cells. Because mitochondria generate energy continuously, they are also a major source of reactive oxygen species. Glutathione helps protect mitochondria from oxidative damage and supports normal cellular energy production. This is one reason glutathione is commonly included in wellness, recovery, and longevity protocols.

 

6. Skin Brightening and Pigmentation Effects

Glutathione has become popular in aesthetic medicine because it may influence melanin production.

 

There are two primary forms of melanin:

• Eumelanin (darker pigment)
• Pheomelanin (lighter pigment)

Laboratory studies suggest glutathione may:
• Inhibit tyrosinase activity
• Reduce eumelanin production
• Shift melanin production toward pheomelanin

This may contribute to skin brightening effects in some individuals. However, evidence for IV glutathione as a skin-lightening treatment remains limited, and results vary significantly between individuals.
